Review
“With Framed Ink, Marcos Mateu distills his twenty-plus year career in feature animation into a clear, practical manual on the language of images. Marcos has a special eye for composition, lighting, and continuity that creates a tangible sense of mood and drama in all of his work.” - Jeffrey Katzenberg, Co-founder and CEO DreamWorks Animation SKG“There are some people who draw in a way that looks like they load their pens with pure liquified fun. Concept artist Marcos Mateu has a wonderful character of line and a jaunty, casual style that makes it look like the lines danced out and created the image of their own accord. His loose, relaxed application of color, which careens between brilliant lights and rich, atmospheric darks, just adds to the visual treat. Mateu’s drawings have just the right touch of exaggeration to give them extra visual appeal; lines are given an extra spring, forms bent out just a bit, and figures swirled into motion in a way that gives everything a sense of verve and life.” - Charley Parker

Great book. NOT a drawing instructional book though. It's theory.
I'm a professional comic artist but I never went to art school so I have to find learning materials on my own. The hardest part of the comic process for me has always been layouts. I've tried reading books on cinematography but none of them really captured the psychology behind a shot that I was looking for. This book does exactly that! The author explains basic cinematography rules, specifically points out what differences in lighting can mean, and explains (with clear examples) what a shot says about a situation without any dialogue. You can piece together a story based around a single shot, and that's exactly what I wanted to learn about. I just wish I had gotten this book before bothering with all the others in my collection.
I thought I reviewed this already... I got this book cause amazon sent me an email. and I'm glad they did.this book changed everything for me. this book goes into alot and I got alot of gems from it. its a great book for any storyteller. But I really enjoyed the art. honestly thought me about silhouette, contrast and composition. which the book touches on but every image in this book is a great example of all three.must have for every and any artist. highly recommend for anyone any form of storytelling or animation and so on. and you might think I've been drawing for years. I've studied other book on composition... thats great! But get this book. it will take you to a whole other level. this is like advanced stuff here. and he goes into illustration, comics, animation. this book is a goldmine.
I don't remember how I stumbled upon this book, but it completely changed the way I think about composition and visual storytelling.Whereas other books cover the basic rules of composition, Framed Ink does a deep dive into drawing and composition as practical tools for effective visual storytelling. The author demonstrates (through an endless array of beautifully rendered images) how to build precise, purposeful compositions from the ground up.Framed Ink would be one of my "desert island" books. I've never found another resource that communicates composition so thoroughly, completely, and effectively.I've read it countless times, and I gain new understanding every time I revisit any of its valuable pages.
So far this book has been everything I have been wanting, in an instructional guide, for creating Graphic Novels. I also have the books Writing and Illustrating the Graphic Novel and Foundations in Comic Book Art.About half way through Writting and Illustrating and just started Foundations. This book I find to be better because Mr. Mateu-Mestre not only is giving you the foundational principles for creating a great Graphic Novel. But also introduces so many great new ideas and ways of changing our thinking and perceptions in regard to the visual arts. When I am learning something I don't just want to learn the how to, but also the why's. The reasonings, the concepts, the underlining purposes. This way I can then adapt, alter and change these to suit my own needs.Like I said, I'm not even finished the book and I think it's Great! I also have his perspective books and ordered his Graphic Novel so that I can actually study his style and methods in action.I am looking to become a Great Graphic Novelist and to do that I might as well learn from the best. From Masters.Going through all my purchases on this subject, this would have been the book I wish I had bought first and then the rest. I am not knocking the rest. I mean glean all the knowledge you can as much as you can. Every Artist has something they can offer you. I'd just say, buy this book first or now, if you are still trying to find an amazing book on the subject. Good luck in your endeavors. All the best.
This book is one of my essential tools for book illustration. The author is economical with his words, which I appreciate. The questions to consider when deciding to illustrate are helpful to break us out of our usual way of seeing. I love his emphasis on mood and expression vs. accurate realism. He has basically distilled what people are attracted to visually and shows us how to leverage those things in our art.
This is a great book! Macros shows you what makes an image, a series of panels, or a film sequence communicate effectively.Framed Ink helps the artist get from crucial idea stage to actually producing work that succeeds in vividly expressing that idea. What makes Framed Ink really special is that everything covered is grounded in learning the language of visual story telling. Lighting, composition, perspective, etc. are all presented and applied within the context of telling a compelling story.By the last chapter you will know a great deal about how to tackle the blank canvas, page, and screen. In fact, even if you aren't an artist and don't want to become one, this is still a great book to enrich your appreciation and understanding of the visual arts: prints, paintings, comics, graphical novels, animation, film.
I used this book a lot throughout my animation schooling. It's a very helpful when it comes to composition and storytelling! Definitely helped me stage a lot of my shots :)
Compostion never really been a problem area for me, back in high school I was most regarded by peers and teachers as someone who knew her compostion. But this book helps bring it to the next level from good to amazing. The illustrations help give the focal point-on how your art should be placed upon your canvas. Don't be focused on your linework be focused on placement. It's an informative text with great examples to back up the claims. Recommend to any type of artist, but especially those interested in comics.
