About the Author
Carlo Maria Flumiani wrote more than twenty books about the stock market. Usually he illustrated them with colorful drawings as this one is. He was apparently born in Italy on August 14, 1901. He came to America as an immigrant in 1924. His books are highly regarded in spite of his flamboyant style and can be found in many financial libraries. A person by that name died on April 7, 1993 and is buried in a cemetery in Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi California. However, no obituary seems to have been published at the time of his death, so it cannot be determined with certainty that this is the same person as the author of this book. His name does not seem to appear in the Social Security Death Index. It is possible and indeed likely that Carlo Maria Flumiani is a pseudonym, his real name was entirely different, and somebody else is buried in that cemetery plot. Jesse Lauriston Livermore was born on 26 July 1877 in Worcester, Massachusetts. His father wanted him to work on the family farm, so he ran away from home with five dollars in his pocket. He got a job with Paine, Weber marking the movement of stocks on a blackboard. After a doing this for a while, he began to notice patterns in price movements so he started making trades himself. Instead of playing on the big board, he soon found he could do better at the “Bucket Shops” which were essentially gambling parlors where the player bet against the house. Only a 10% margin was required at these bucket shops. Since the most he could lose was his 10% down but the amount he could make was infinite, soon Livermore became so good at this that he broke all the bucket shops. Later, Bucket Shops were made illegal by the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. Livermore became famous for making millions by selling short during the bear markets of 1907 and 1929. Although he was known for short selling, he usually went long in the market. His most famous for the book Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefèvre. It is not known whether Edwin Lefèvre was a ghost writer or a pseudonym for Livermore himself. The book is required for anyone interested in being a securities trader. Livermore died by suicide on 28 November 1940 in Manhattan, New York. He left behind two sons, Jesse Jr. and Paul. Jesse Jr. was born 13 September 1919 in Lake Placid, New York and died 20 February 1976 in Palm Beach County, Florida. Paul Livermore was born on 3 April 1923 and died 2 May 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
